Feathers & Tails Parrot Sanctuary & Rescue

About us

Feathers & Tails Rescue and Rehoming is run by both owners of F&T, Cassy & Lily and opened our doors in 2023 to help birds in need.
We take in parrots, provide a loving environment, rehabilitate, provide veterinary treatment and eventually re-home and match the bird with the right family/home. We also offer a safe home for stray parrots and work hard to reunite them with their owner.
We would never turn a bird away regardless of age, behavioural problems or health conditions.
Whilst some of our parrots that are surrendered into our care come from a loving home, we do get some birds that have a sad and traumatic past who need extra care and understanding.

Please note; we will never re-home one of our birds for breeding!

Is adopting a bird right for you?

Adopting a parrot is a lifelong commitment and the decision should not be an impulse choice. Please consider if the timing is right and think ahead of future plans such as family commitments, job changes, current or future pets and would these changes impact a parrot? Is it the right time or should you wait for a more settled time in your life?
Many parrots get re-homed multiple times in their lifetime and we are trying to prevent this! A parrot is for life so we implore you to take the responsibility seriously. Please ensure you have done a lot of research on parrot behaviour, the individual species you wish to adopt- as all parrots are different, biting, hormones, toxic items in the home, dust/dander, and please do, take your time!

Some parrots for adoption come with a heavy past and may come with some behaviour issues so please do take this in mind. Although we work with our birds to help get them ready for a new home, our work will need to be continued to ensure a happy bird.

Birds don’t suit all home lifestyles, they come with a big commitment and lifestyle changes. They can be destructive, noisy and very messy! Consider whether you or your family members have any of the following:

  • Sensitivities to noise: Parrots can cause additional challenges for individuals with autism or similar conditions, but in general can be difficult to live with due to them displaying natural behaviours such as screaming/flock calling, repetitive talking, ear piercing noises, banging toys, and unpredictable behaviours.
  • Asthma and Respiratory Issues: Birds produce a dust/dander that can worsen respiratory conditions such as asthma or COPD.
  •  Allergies: Bird dander, feathers and their droppings may trigger allergies, resulting in skin reactions and respiratory issues.

More information:

All birds that are available adoption on this page are tested NEGATIVE for Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease and Avian Polyomavirus. We work with each bird to understand their behaviour, needs and personality which allows us to match with potential adopters.

In order to be considered to adopt one of our birds, an avian adoption form needs to be completed, then if you have potentially successfully match on paper, we will arrange an in depth conversation to go over care, diet, behaviour etc and that you understand the commitment and reality of sharing your home with a bird/parrot. Then, a meet and greet appointment with the bird will be made.
We will need to see proof of accommodation if this is not bought from us instore (see adoption policy) and you must be willing to make multiple visits to start building a relationship with the bird and demonstrate confidence around the bird, where and when necessary.

Please ensure
that you have done some research on general care and on the species of bird you wish to adopt. You are more than welcome to visit us in-store for an educational talk if you wish to widen your knowledge or have any questions. Adoptions are not first come, first served, we will always match the bird with the most suited person/home lifestyle. We always advise to call ahead to avoid disappointment and please note, no adoptions or meetings will take place within the last hour before closing.

Adoption fees & policies apply.

Roxy

Species: Alexandrine
Age: 5 Years Old
Sex: Female

Information: She can be a nervous lady but will step up once trust is gained. She does have stereotypical behaviour which is reducing over time and her veterinary exams did show she has early signs of atherosclerosis which more than likely would have been caused by lack of exercise and poor diet.

Please complete the Avian Adoption form to be considered to adopt Roxy

Cookie

Species: Caique *NOT YET READY
Age: 20 Years Old
Sex: Female (DNA sexed)

Information: Cookie is tame and although an older lady, that doesn’t slow her down. She arrived into our care as her owner sadly passed away and her kind neighbour has been caring for her since. She self plucks but we are working on reducing her plucking behaviour, which we are seeing positive results but awaiting a vet visit.

Avian form needs to be completed to be considered to adopt cookie

Pico & Tweety

Species: Pacific Parrotlets
Age: Around 3 years old
Sex: Female & Male

Information: They are untame, but are used to living within the home environment and having lots of free flying time out of their cage. Pico was known to step up for her previous owner after a lot of hard work and trust building.

An avian adoption form needs to be completed to be considered to adopt Pico & Tweety

Jackie

Species: African Grey Parrot
Age: 11 years
Sex: Female- DNA sexed

Information: She arrived in our rescue in October through the re-homing service / support we offer. She was a hands off bird and left to her own devices but was a much loved pet. We have been working with Jackie to gain her trust and grow her confidence as she can be nervous. We are working on managing her feather plucking to reduce this behaviour, which any new potential owner will need to keep this in mind.

Please note, African greys are an advanced species to share your home with. Ensure intensive research is done before filling out the form or contacting us to be considered to adopt.

*Jackie is still undergoing rehabilitation so is currently only available for adoption to a large parrot experienced home only, who can continue our work*

Avian form needs to be completed to be considered to adopt Jackie /

Please fill out this adoption form if you would like to adopt one of our birds.
